BREAKING THE SILENCE: YOUTH ADVOCATES FOR THE RIGHT TO SEXUALITY AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT.
This project is supported by CISU through 100% for children, and implemented by Help Mission Development Services in Baringo County and Positive Life Kenya in Mlolongo in Machakos County. The project reached 34 schools (HMDS 17 schools and Positive life Kenya 17) and direct beneficiaries 4080 students.
Overall objective of the project was to empower young people to have increased control over their own lives and bodies and the community factors which impact upon it. Youth were to advocate for the Right to Sexuality and Civic Engagement. This intervention was very timely because formal education did not have nor had very little room for student participation beyond recitation and answering the teacher’s questions with yes or no answers. This was very difficult for students to express themselves in analytical and critical thinking.
The intervention to achieve its objective, was realized through structured trainings conducted by teachers with the help of project staff (HMDS staff)using the Active Assesement Methodologies, formation of clubs, Digital ambassadors, advocacy through public officials, community forums and radio presentations in Baringo County. Youth from 17 learning institutions in Baringo County have gained the knowledge and skills to intervene in their surroundings and speak up and advocate for their own rights through civil society engagement.
